Is “Celtic music” a recognized category in Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany as it is in North America?

Or are the differences among Irish music, Scots traditional music, etc., considered more important? Do Irish bands have strong followings in Scotland and vice versa? Are there festivals or other events that encompass Celtic music as a general tradition?
All right . . . I hereby add Wales to the list. Long live Bryn Terfel.

There’s the "Celtic Connections" festival in Glasgow every year. I am not so sure if Irish bands have such a strong following in Scotland though. It’s not like the USA & Canada where Lorena McKennit is classed as "Celtic". Sure one or two of her songs are, but not all.

Anyway, here is a link to "Celtic Connections" :- http://www.celticconnections.com/

Yes Cymro Bach, they shouldn’t have missed out Wales & the Eisteffod, but Scotland has its own equivalent in the "Mod" & genetically are just as Celtic as Wales. Gaelic is indeed held to be from the Q branch of Celtic langauges which is widely agreed to be older than Welsh (P Celtic).

I think there are probably a lot of American celtic bands unknown in Ireland/Scotland, but a lot more bands are now doing tours (often with fans) in Ireland, Scotland, Europe, etc. Some of my favorite bands from the U.S. that have toured Ireland – Fenians, Prodigals, Brigid’s Cross, Young Dubliners, Elders. I know Brigid’s Cross played at some festival well known in Ireland…Brian something? I tried to find name, but couldn’t. I also love Wolfstone, a band from Scotland. They have played festivals in UK and toured Scotland. If you want more information, send me a message or just search on the internet.

Yes ‘Celtic Music’ is recognised as a general category but of course you will get a lot of sub categories within that. Yes irish bands would be popular in scotland and vice versa.
